A System Basis Chip (SBC) is an integrated circuit that combines several basic functions for operating an electronic assembly. An SBC is typically used in combination with a Microcontroller or processor is used and takes over supporting system functions related to power supply, monitoring, and communication.
Among the frequently integrated function blocks are, for example:
- Voltage regulator
- Voltage monitoring
- Reset generator
- Window watchdog
- Bus interfaces like CAN or LIN
- Wakeup logic
- Performance driver
Through this integration, an SBC provides central infrastructure functions for a Control unit or embedded system ready and particularly supports the System and Safety Concept, for example, through monitoring mechanisms or watchdog functions.
The performance of such building blocks varies greatly. Some SBCs have a Configurable Architecture, which can be parameterized, for example, via a serial interface such as SPI. Other variants have a simpler structure and possess a fixed, hardware-implemented functionality.
